Music at CUMC
Music at CUMC-HMB consists of many active music groups, and a new experimental musical effort for the program here at CUMC. These groups and programs are described below.
CHANCEL CHOIR: Although I strongly desire that a core of singers will continue to make the long-term Chancel Choir commitment to participate in order to assure the survival of this important activity of worship, starting Thursday, August 30, 2012, each Chancel Choir singer will be given an opportunity to choose specific seasons as a commitment, as outlined below:
- After Pentecost: Thurs, Aug 30 – Sun Oct 28 – Reformation (All Saints Day is celebrated on November 4th)
- Advent – Christmas: Thurs Nov 1 – Mon Dec 24 – Christmas Eve
- Epiphany – Easter: January 6 – March 31
- 2nd Sunday of Easter – Father’s Day: April 4 – June 16, 2013
Rehearsals for the Chancel Choir are now scheduled for each Thursday (6:30 – 8:00 PM), starting Thursday, August 30th. This is a new rehearsal time for Chancel Choir, so I ask that you plan accordingly. The Chancel Choir will be scheduled to sing on the 1st, 2nd, and 4th Sundays of each month. However, this ensemble will also sing for all scheduled holiday and special services.
MEN IN BLACK: Rehearsals for Men In Black are now scheduled for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Thursday of each month (8:00 – 9:00 PM) starting Thursday, August 30th. This is a new rehearsal day and time for Men In Black, so I ask that you plan accordingly. This ensemble is scheduled to sing the Third Sunday of each Month (plus whatever additional holiday special services are agreed upon).
BELLS OF JOY: Caroline Harnly conducts Bells of Joy. They rehearse on Tuesday Evenings in the Choir Room (7:15 – 8:300 PM). They perform each 3rd Sunday, through June. If you are interested in joining the hand bell ensemble, please contact Caroline Harnly.
CHILDREN’S CHOIR: Gail Erwin is the conductor of the Children’s Choir. They rehearse on Monday afternoons in the Sanctuary (from 4:00 – 4:45 PM). The ensemble is made up of children between the ages of 6 – 12. They currently sing in worship services by arrangement. Anyone interested in participating by having a child join this group or if you have questions, should contact Gail Erwin.
CCY BAND: For the Fall Season, singers of this group are asked to join the Youth Voices (see below) on the 2nd and 4th Sundays, after the 10:00 service (11:30 – 12:30). The instrumentalists will be assembled for specific special performances with the Youth Voices, and will have rehearsals scheduled accordingly.
INSTRUMENTS OF JOY: Instruments of Joy is an eclectic group of musicians. Patricia Bartscher manages this ensemble. The intent of this group is to bring instrumental music to the worship experience. Whether accompanying the choir, or playing in instrumental ensembles, the instrumental voices enhance the liturgy! Are you a musician who would like to share your talents during worship services?
Currently, the following instruments are included: Flute, clarinet, French horn, trumpet, trombone, percussion, guitar, keyboard, harp, violin, cello, double bass.
Plans are being formulated to include instruments in more service activities of the church. If you play an instrument and would like to be a part of this group, or simply desire further information, please contact Patty Bartscher.
New Voices & Youth Voices: These represent new, experimental efforts for the Music Program here at CUMC-HMB. These are two separate Vocal Training groups.
Each Sunday as we participate in the hymns, I am amazed at the strong level of singing I hear in the congregation. It occurred to me that there just might be some in the congregation who would enjoy learning Basic Vocal Technique and Fun Songs. With this in mind, I am asking those of you who wish to become involved in this kind of effort to join with me in the Choir Room Sundays, after the service for what should be an enjoyable time together for Basic Voice Training and Easy Ensemble singing. Starting on Sunday September 2, the schedule will be like this:
Adult Singers (men and women) will gather on the 1st and 3rd Sundays, starting Sept. 2 (11:30-12:30).
Youth Singers meet on the 2nd and 4th Sundays (starting Sept. 9) of the month (11:30-12:30).
If you enjoy singing, but would like to learn more about how it is done, please feel free to contact our Director of Music Ministry, Milton Williams.
